Currently, national pension systems are confronted with a number of major challenges. Among these, the multifaceted challenge of demographic change, involving falling fertility rates, increased longevity, changing migration patterns and evolving family structures, is pre-eminent. Most commonly, demographic change is viewed as threatening the financial sustainability of pension systems. In addition, the current global economic downturn has accentuated the financial pressures attributable to demographic change. This Social Policy Highlight examines the challenge of demographic change as it applies to pension systems and explains how they can adapt to address this challenge.

Vergrijzing in cijfers
Tegen midden 2030 zal de helft van de bevolking van West Europa ouder zijn dan 50. Wie die leeftijd bereikt, heeft dan nog gemiddeld 40 jaar te leven.
Oost Europa
Oost Europa en Rusland dreigen te worden geconfronteerd met een ware demografische ineenstorting. Ondanks het feit dat de geboortecijfers weer stijgen, dreigt de Russische bevolking tegen 2050 terug te vallen van 144 naar 104 miljoen mensen.
Vruchtbaarheid
De landen met de laagste vruchtbaarheidsgraad vinden we nu in Azië. In Hongkong is er gemiddeld minder dan 1 kind per vruchtbare vrouw. In Singapore en ZuidKorea is dat niet iets meer. Zelfs landen als Pakistan en Afghanistan, die nu nog een vruchtbaarheidsgraad van 4 en 6,6 hebben,zullen tegen 2050 terugvallen tot een peil dat net volstaat om de bevolking op peil te houden.
Levensverwachting
Tegen het midden van de eeuw zal de gemiddelde levensverwachting 84 jaar bedragen in de ontwikkelde landen en 77 in de rest van de wereld
