2009 Ageing Communication: a renewed strategy for tackling Europe’s demographic challenge

Europe's population is living increasingly longer and in better health, a huge achievement that we have every reason to be proud of. However, ageing populations also pose major economic, budgetary and social challenges. While the first priority is to make the current recession as short as possible, we must not lose sight of the policies and reforms needed to ensure that the elderly have decent pensions and access to health and long-term care without putting an unsustainable burden on future generations. The 2009 Ageing Communication adopted today states that governments have a window of opportunity before the baby-boom generation retires, to implement policies that address the challenge whilst being compatible with the need to support the economy at this juncture, as recommended in the December European Economic Recovery Plan. Europese Dag van de solidariteit en de samenwerking tussen generaties: 29 april 2009

Tijdens een Europese conferentie in Slovenië, die plaatsvond in april 2008, stelde de Sloveense minister voor Arbeid en Sociale Zaken voor om 29 april uit te roepen tot de Europese Dag van de Intergenerationele Solidariteit. Deze dag is een gelegenheid om intergenerationele initiatieven voor te stellen en ze een ruimere bekendheid te geven. Om deze Europese dag te steunen, heeft de Europese Commissie beslist een Euroflash-enquête uit te voeren naar het standpunt van de Europese burgers inzake de solidariteit tussen de generaties. Deze Euroflash zal worden gepubliceerd ter gelegenheid van de Europese dag. AGE, het Europees Jeugdforum, de Europese Vrouwenlobby, AIM, AEIP en CECODHAS hebben beslist om hun samenwerking voort te zetten en een campagne te lanceren om deze Europese Dag een ruimere bekendheid te geven en alle betrokken actoren aan te moedigen iets te organiseren rond deze Europese dag.
